Following a creditable performance in midweek by the South African team in beating Jamaica 2-0, you could be forgiven in thinking that the World Cup squad is starting to produce some positive results. Now that the Germany camp has been wound up, Carlos Perreira beleives that the players are beginning to create some valuable team chemistry. In announcing his preliminary squad, Perreira finally brought together his domestic camp players with those from Europe with some interesting surprises.
Benni McCarthy makes the 29 man roster despite rumors of being overweight and out of shape. His inclusion is a definite morale booster provided he can contribute meaningfully, or Perreira will have no mercy in cutting him from the 23-man Finals squad. Bafana Bafana badly need him to score goals if they are to show any progress in their matches against Mexico, Uruguay and France in Group A.
Thankfully, the SAFA got it’s act together and scheduled 3, maybe 4 friendlies for Perreira to hone his squad. Currently Bulgaria, Columbia and Denmark are penciled in with one more open date left. If the squad can generate some offense, then I think they have a shot at making some waves when they run out on June 11th. Perreira likes that the squad has found it’s style and sticks to it’s shape although the Brazilian is desperately trying to show his players the importance of keeping the ball on the ground.
One problem that continues to bother the management team is the varied fitness and sharpness of some of the European based players. Steven Pienaar, for instance, has played 27 games since November while some other squad members have been inactive for weeks at a time. Rowen Fernandez, Kagisho Dikgacoi, MacBeth Sibaya and Bernard Parker have a tough road ahead to convince the coaching staff that they are fit enough and prepared enough to make the squad.
