Schalkwyk to solve his problem

Orlando Pirates attacking midfielder Gert Schalkwyk tells KickOff.com that Bucs' last six League games are his chance to prove he deserves to wear the black and white jersey.

The Bafana Bafana midfielder says he is worried about his performances at club level.

"I think the Bafana camp (in Durban) was a great experience and it gives me confidence as we face the last six games of the season (against SuperSport United, Wits, Amazulu, Maritzburg United, Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic). It was good for me and the rest of the players in the squad," he says.

"I was happy with my performance in the seven games I have started for Pirates this season, but my biggest problem and I think that's why people keep criticizing me, is that I haven't scored a goal for Pirates.

" If only I can start scoring then people will see that when I get a chance to start for Pirates I do well for the team… I think people will realise that I have a lot to offer the team.

"But now they can't see it because the goals aren't coming. But I'm ready and looking forward to the last six games and hopefully the goals would come," says Schalkwyk, who scored a brace in a practice match against Swaziland during the local camp.

FIFA World Cup Profile

Although South Africa has made two appearances in the World Cup, they have not made it past the first round. Their first appearance was in France 1998, six years after they had been readmitted to the global football family.

Despite a 3-0 drubbing to France in their opening game, they went on to draw against Denmark and Saudi Arabia. Korea/Japan 2002 was expected to be an opportunity for Bafana Bafana to step up to the next level but, unfortunately, they flattered to deceive, crashing out after the group stage despite beating Slovenia 1-0 for their first-ever FIFA World Cup win.

Cape Town stadium is ready and waiting for some football

The stadium to be used in Cape Town South Africa during the 2010 World Cup is now complete and the keys are now firmly in the pocket of Cape Town Executive Mayor Alderman Dan Plato.

“At a special ceremony to mark the completion of one of the world’s most spectacular stadiums, the ‘keys’ will be handed by the main contractors, Murray and Roberts and WBHO, to Cape Town’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato,” the city said in a statement last week.

The stadium is a 68,000 all seater facility and construction began in March 2007 and it has been completed on schedule, if a little over budget.

During construction the stadium used 96,000 cubic metres of concrete, the roof has a total weight of 4,700 tons (about the same weight as 325 London double decker buses) and uses 9,000 glass panels to over 37,000 square metres of roof.

The stadium is also now officially named the Cape Town Stadium and will host eight matches during the World Cup including one semi final match.

Sedibe is new Safa CEO

The 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee legal adviser, who is married to Generations actress Sonia, has signed a 12-month contract and will relinquish the position when Danny Jordaan returns from his duties with the 2010 World Cup organizing committee.

Jordaan was the Safa CEO until he was seconded to serve in a similar position at the LOC in 2005.

Hack was a close confidant of Irvin Khoza and now plays the price for his long-standing relationship with the ‘Iron Duke’, who was thwarted in his bid to take control of Safa.

New Safa president Kirsten Nematandani has spent the last months seeking to establish his power and the installation of Sidibe is the latest step in the process.

Safa are setting up an ambitious four year plan that Sidibe is expected to lead.

Jordaan was seconded to the LOC in 2005 by the previous Safa executive to serve as its chief executive until after the 2010 Fifa World Cup campaign.

Before that Jordaan was Safa CEO. Hack was roped in to stand in for him until December 31, 2010.

Hack said yesterday: “I’m not leaving under any cloud.
“I want to assure you that there is no animosity between me and the Safa executive committee. I was not pushed.”

Hack , also lawyer by profession, will continue to serve on the LOC board, as well as the Fifa and CAF disciplinary committees.

African Nations Cup of 2006

South Africa failed to impress local supporters by not scoring a single goal in the African Nations Cup of 2006. In light of these poor performances it was decided that the hiring of a more experienced manager was essential. Rumours began to fly, prior to the 2006, that England coach Sven-Göran Eriksson was to be the man for the job, with SAFA apparently offering him R30 million to take Bafana-Bafana to glory in 2010. However this has since been denied. More recently the former Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has accepted the job. He signed a R100 million contract covering four years. His term as manager started 1 January 2007 targeting 2010 FIFA World Cup but he resigned in April 2008 due to family reasons.

Joel Santana signed to coach until 2010. South Africa hosted the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, a year before their World Cup, and finished in fourth place, coming through the group stages with a win over New Zealand and a draw with Iraq, despite a loss to Spain. They then lost in the semi-finals to Brazil, conceding a late free-kick after holding the South Americans at bay for most of the match. In the 3rd-place play-off, they lost to Spain after extra time, despite leading 1-0 at one stage. For many commentators, the ability of Bafana Bafana to stand up to the South American and European champions showed just how far the team had come.
